There are endless tips you can find on how to select a builder. At Berry Homes’, we have 3 main areas that we believe are the most important and cover most of the concerns you should have as a potential home buyer.
- Research your builders’ reputation from verifiable sources. Check to see if they are part of the Better Business Bureau and what their track record is. Start asking lots of questions — of both the potential builders and the owners of their homes.
- Shop for Quality and Value. Look at new homes whenever you can. You may also ask a builder to see unfinished homes. When examining a home, look at the quality of the construction features. Inspect the quality of the cabinetry, carpeting, trimwork and paint. Ask them as many questions as you can think of, and get as many specifics as possible. Take notes and don’t hesitate to ask a question you might think is insignificant – that question might yield an important answer. One of our most favorite things to remind home buyers is that “There is hardly anything in the world that some man can’t make a little worse and sell a little cheaper, and the people who consider price only are this man’s lawful prey.” (John Ruskin, 1819-1900, English art critic and social commentator.)
- Be Aware of the service you will receive after the sale is complete. Does your builder offer a warranty? How many customers need to contact the builder for major warranty items? How many get quick service for smaller warranty items? Be confident that your builder has been in business long enough, and will still be in business later, when your warranty needs might arise – 1, 5 or 10 years later.
